About the Role:

Quartz is seeking a talented, experienced, high-metabolism, and digitally-savvy Executive Editor to help lead our newsroom. This editor will manage reporters and coordinate with editors across beats and functions. Reporting to the Editor in Chief, the Executive Editor will drive hourly, daily, and weekly coverage of market-moving developments across a range of business news topics, companies, sectors and geographies.

We’re looking for an established, strategic-minded journalist with the proven ability to lead a group of reporters, assign and edit copy across a wide range of topics and story types, tirelessly drive and shape coverage, and juggle competing news and strategic priorities when resources are finite – all with a mind toward growing digital audience. The ideal candidate has strong news judgment, sharp assignment and story editing skills, a collaborative spirit combined with a decisive approach, and a deep understanding of digital best practices, from headlines and SEO to different digital platforms.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Drive the newsroom's hourly and daily operations, making quick editorial decisions and ensuring stories are moved with both speed and care. Drive news planning, from the hour ahead to the day ahead to the week and month ahead
• Manage, assign, and edit multiple reporters and their stories, ensuring high-quality and timely publishing
• Develop and implement editorial strategies and newsroom processes to drive audience growth, leveraging digital best practices and innovative storytelling techniques
• Cultivate a culture of journalistic excellence and digital growth, mentoring and developing reporters
• Foster strong, collaborative relationships with editors and reporters across the newsroom

Qualifications:
• At least 3-5 years experience assigning and editing stories for a digital news publisher. Business news experience preferred
• Sharp assignment and line editing skills and the ability to juggle multiple stories of different types and on different topics
• Deep understanding of digital best practices for news audience growth, including story selection and framing, headline writing, distribution and platforms, and SEO
• A passion and tireless metabolism for hourly and daily news, and the proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Exceptional organizational skills

This position has range of $80,000 up to $85,000 annually, dependent upon years of related experience.

The ideal candidate is a strong, fast, and clean writer, as well as a pop culture junkie with his/her/their finger on the pulse of the entertainment news and personalities that matter most to Black audiences. Your familiar with Hollywood and you know your way around a junket. You are skilled at asking questions that elicits something fresh and original. Pop culture is important to The Root, so you’ll play a vital and visible role as our eyes and ears in this world. You’ll write about the stars making big moves, but also the issues and subjects driving conversation and debate. And you must feel comfortable on camera, interviewing big names.

This is a great opportunity for an idea machine, a go-getter with fresh POVs, an appetite for arts and culture, and a way with words.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Cover the latest entertainment, celebrity, and pop culture that’s relevant and resonant with Black audiences, usually under deadline. Pitch culture stories that contextualize the trends and news of the day
• Liaise with the entertainment community to ensure The Root’s access to talent and events. Your goal is to develop relationships, land big interviews, and break some news
• Contribute daily stories to The Root and helping ensure The Root is covering the biggest stories of the day
• Attend events, panels, and screenings on behalf of The Root
• Appear on camera for G/O and outside media on behalf of The Root
• Stay on top of Black trends, news and events on social & broadcast platforms, flag emerging stories for your Editors

Qualifications
